Last weekend in Broward County, Florida at the Ft Lauderdale Convention Center, teams from all across the country met up to compete at the AAU Scholastic Duals. This event is usually held at the Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando and was known as “The Disney Duals”.

I had a chance to speak with Hernando HS wrestler Emma Bauknight. Emma placed 7th in the state in 2023 and was a District Champion. She also won numerous big tournaments including the prestigious Knockout Tournament.

This past weekend at Walsh Jesuit HS in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio was the very first Ironman tourney for girls. This event has been going on for boys for the past 29 years and this year [2023] was the very first time in the tournaments history where the girls were able to compete in their very own tournament.

Sydney Bridenstine was a very tough wrestler in the state of Florida. She was a part of Phoenix Women’s Wrestling Club and wrestled in high school for Hernando HS. She placed 4th at the FHSAA Girls State Championships and then signed to wrestle for Lindsey-Wilson College.

Under the bright arena lights at the Tulsa Nationals—the tournament everyone warned was the toughest youth event in the country—six-year-old Genevieve Valdovinos stepped onto the mat with a calm that didn’t belong to someone her age.
