2025 Kings of Florida Breakdown

🌟 The 2025 Kings of Florida: End the Debate - A Huge Success! 🌟

We are thrilled to announce that the 2025 Kings of Florida: End the Debate event was a monumental success! On April 19th, 2025, we held this inaugural dual formatted event to determine once and for all which classification reigns supreme: 1A, 2A, or 3A. After an exciting day of wrestling, it was 3A that emerged victorious!

The competition was fierce, but the 1A team faced a setback with two wrestlers missing weight, putting them 12 points behind before even stepping onto the mat. It became clear that giving away those points was costly, as a full team could have potentially changed the outcome and contended for the Kings Cup.

One of the highlights of the event was the match at 132 pounds between Christian Fretwell, a 3X FHSAA State Champion from Lake Gibson HS, and Illia Kyrianenko, another FHSAA State Champion who boasted a perfect 41-0 record leading up to the state title. Fretwell showcased his dominance by winning the match decisively, with a score of 16-3 over the undefeated state champion.

The first match of the event featured another thrilling state champion vs. state champion battle: RJ Phelan from Lake Gibson took on Elijah Castanon, a 7th-grade state champion from Miami Christian School. This match did not disappoint, as it went into sudden death overtime, with Castanon securing the victory for the 1A squad with a takedown in OT. The fans were treated to an incredible display of talent and determination, just as we had hoped!

We also introduced the challenge brick system, similar to what you see in college wrestling. Coaches had two challenge bricks to use during the matches, and if they won their challenge, they got their brick back for future use. This added an exciting layer to the event, and the officials did a fantastic job overseeing the challenges and video reviews.

This event will now become an annual tradition, and with a full year to plan for next year’s competition, we are excited to make it even better! A huge thank you to Coach Travis Patrick of Southeastern University for allowing us to host this event on his beautiful campus in Lakeland, FL.

Stay tuned for more details about next year’s Kings of Florida event. We can’t wait to see you all again!
