TFWR Team of the Week: South Broward High School Girls Wrestling Team

This week, we proudly celebrate the South Broward High School Girls Wrestling Team as the TFWR Team of the Week! The Lady Bulldogs have truly turned heads and defied expectations with their remarkable performances throughout the season. Under the leadership of Head Coach Major Threlkeld, the team recently clinched the FHSAA 1A Girls District 15 Championships, showcasing the strength and talent of every wrestler on the roster.

A Collective Effort

Coach Threlkeld emphasized that every girl on the team contributed to their championship title. Whether they secured victories to score points or worked tirelessly in practice to prepare themselves and their teammates, each athlete played a vital role in the team’s overall success. This spirit of teamwork and dedication has been a cornerstone of their journey.

District Achievements

At the District 15 Championships, several Lady Bulldogs placed in their weight classes, marking significant achievements as they move forward to compete in the FHSAA Regional Girls Championships this weekend. Here’s how the team performed:

  • 100 pounds: 5th Place – Kailanni Villanueva
  • 105 pounds: 5th Place – Logan Hawn
  • 110 pounds: 2nd Place – Sabrina Posada
  • 115 pounds: 3rd Place – Nicole Arroyo
  • 120 pounds: 4th Place – Lucia Cantillano
  • 125 pounds: 6th Place – Kayla Smith
  • 130 pounds: 3rd Place – Jaralynn Gutierrez
  • 135 pounds: 2nd Place – Aubrey Morsillo
  • 140 pounds: 5th Place – Martina Antunez
  • 145 pounds: 5th Place – Gianna Chacon
  • 155 pounds: 3rd Place – Jadalynn Gutierrez
  • 170 pounds: 2nd Place – Nikki Smith
  • 190 pounds: 1st Place – Latoya Sylvestre
  • 235 pounds: 5th Place – Chelsea Calcaneo

A standout performance came from Latoya Sylvestre, who won her weight class with a quick pin in the first period. Currently ranked #4 in the TFWR State Rankings, Latoya has a legitimate shot at making the state finals. Coach Threlkeld noted the challenging competition she will face, including nationally ranked wrestlers Grace Leota and Cheyenne Cruce.

Building a Powerhouse

Coach Threlkeld took over the South Broward program, which was once a state powerhouse under Hall of Fame Coach Allen Held. Since his arrival, Coach Threlkeld has revitalized the program, leading both the boys' and girls' teams to state placers in the past few years and aiming to build on that success.

When asked about the team’s chances at the upcoming regional championships, Coach Threlkeld acknowledged the tough competition in Region 4, which has become known as "The Region of Doom." He stated, "Just getting out of that region probably means you'll be standing on the podium on Saturday night at the Silver Spurs Arena with a state medal around your neck." He expressed confidence in Latoya Sylvestre's work ethic and potential, stating that she, along with one other boy on the team, has the best work ethic in the room.

Congratulations!

We are thrilled to announce the FHSAA District 15 Champions, the South Broward Girls Wrestling Team, as this week’s TFWR Team of the Week! Their determination, teamwork, and remarkable achievements continue to set the standard for excellence in Florida wrestling. We can’t wait to see what this exceptional team accomplishes next!
